What is Aikido?

Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art focused on harmony, balance, and efficient movement rather than brute strength. Instead of meeting force with force, Aikido teaches practitioners to blend with an attack, redirect energy, and resolve conflict with control and awareness.

Training emphasizes:

  • Joint locks and throws

  • Balance, posture, and movement

  • Calm focus under pressure

  • Mutual respect and cooperation

Aikido is non-competitive and adaptable, making it suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels. Beyond physical technique, it cultivates mindfulness, confidence, and a deeper understanding of how to respond to challenges—both on and off the mat.

Aikido was founded by O-Sensei, Morihei Ueshiba, in Japan in the early 20th century as the culmination of a lifetime of martial training and deep spiritual study. Drawing from classical jujutsu, sword, and spear arts, he developed Aikido not merely as a method of self-defense, but as a discipline devoted to harmony, ethical conduct, and the resolution of conflict without unnecessary harm. O-Sensei believed true budo was an expression of peace—training the body and spirit together so that strength is guided by compassion, balance, and responsibility toward others.
