Japanese Sword Study Group
Exploring the Principles and Practice of Japanese Swordsmanship
Shreveport Aikido Academy offers a monthly Japanese Sword Study Group dedicated to the study and practice of traditional Japanese swordsmanship. Drawing on techniques and principles from Aikido, Aiki-ken, Iaido, and Kenjutsu, the group explores the fundamentals of Japanese sword use through structured, instructor-led training. Sessions emphasize proper sword handling, body mechanics, solo forms, and cooperative partner exercises. Our goal is to develop a deeper understanding of the sword and the principles that connect different Japanese martial arts traditions.
All experience levels are welcome. No previous sword training is required.
What We Study
Each session focuses on selected aspects of Japanese swordsmanship, including:
Sword Fundamentals
Proper grip, posture, cutting mechanics, footwork, and coordination of the sword with whole-body movement.
Solo Forms and Exercises
Individual exercises and forms designed to develop precision, balance, fluidity, and control while reinforcing fundamental sword techniques.
Partner Drills
Cooperative exercises exploring distance (ma-ai), timing, positioning, and the practical application of sword movements.
Principles and Applications
Exploration of concepts drawn from Aikido, Aiki-ken, Iaido, and Kenjutsu, examining how different traditions approach movement, technique, and the relationship between practitioners.
Topics and exercises may vary from month to month, allowing participants to explore different aspects of Japanese swordsmanship while continuing to develop their fundamentals.
